How to Write for the FOB of a Magazine

How to Write for the FOB of a MagazineHow to Write for the FOB of a MagazineEditors at magazines use slang terms, or industry terminology, to refer to different sections of a magazine. One such term is for the front of the book, which is also known asFront of Book, Front-of-the-Book, or FOB. FOB Slang for a Particular Section of a Magazine The book, first off, is another word editors use to refer to the magazine itself. Therefore, the front of the book is used to refer to the front, or opening, section of a magazine. Magazines are broken down into three sections by editors the front of the bookthe featurethe back of the book Not every magazine follows the three-part structure, but the majority do and the front of the book usually contains smaller, shorter stories than the feature section (where features usually run). When you read a magazine youll notice that the first few pages are often dedicated to smaller stories and that the cover stories (and longer stories) are usually in the middle of the magazine. Those first few pages you read are part of the front of the book. Whats Up Front? The term FOB may be slang, but its serious business. Editors are very calculated about the types of stories, short articles, and advertisements they choose to publish in this section. Some of the usual pieces that are found in the front of the book are The Table of ContentsSince advertisers usually prefer the right side of a magazine spread for better visibility, the table of contents ends up being thefirst page of pretty much any magazine.MastheadThis master list of all the people that work in the magazine is usually on one of the first couples of pages. It may share the page with an advertisement or even letters and opinions from readers.A Letter From the EditorThe editors welcome letter explains the content of the issue and is always the first editorial page in a magazine. This piece is instrumental in expressing the editors journalism style while covering the main to pics of the issue and introducing overlying themes. One-Page TopicsGenerally magazines jump into content with short one-page topics that contain news, reviews, and highlights of arts, culture, upcoming events, and more. Often short one-page columns, interviews, and opinions are also placed here. How to Write for the Front of Book Many editors are regularly on the hunt for well written and interesting stories to fill one-page topic pages. If you are interested in pitching a story or have been given an assignment for the FOB, it is best to start with the magazines guidelines for writing. Usually, articles meant for this section of the magazine range from 100 to 300 words and should focus on one small aspect of the subject you would like to write about. Common Formats Most magazines have a uniform, standardized design for their one-page topics pages. The design is changed only slightly from issue to issue. To keep the interest of the reader, some common formats used in the FOB i nclude Images accompanied by short descriptions of key points. For example, Mens Health magazine features a Bulletin page that spells out 12 of the latest scientific studies released since the last issue was released. Each study snippet is accompanied by an illustration.A full-page photo with a brief story or description. Two short front-of-book articles that share a page with an ad image.Timelines created with dates, images, and short descriptions to better describe the evolution of a certain idea, story, or product. Comparison of products, trends, places, or outfits. These short topics are usually very visual stories as well. As you can see, there are a lot of different ways that the FOB can be presented. Though a magazine may stick to a certain way of telling their stories issue after issue, the possibilities out there for all the different types of formatting are endless. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the formatting used by the magazine you want to write for and dont skip reading the magazines writers manual thoroughly before you start.

Jobs That Require No Experience or Little Training [Top 10]

Jobs That Require No Experience or Little Training Top 10Jobs That Require No Experience or Little Training Top 10 That Dont Require Training or ExperienceFor most recruiters, the first step in their applicant screening process is to look at work experience, formal training, education or certification. The operative word here is most. The reality is that there are plenty of jobs out there that can be done without a specific tischset of hard skills gained from past experience.Wait. What are hard skills? you ask. These refer to skills that are teachable, the ones you can learn in a classroom, through training courses and materials, or from previous jobs.Accounting skills are an excellent example of hard skills. To be an accountant, you need to learn specific principles of accounting, and this is done through formal education and career advancement.Computer programming/coding is another example of a hard skill so are foreign language skills since one must learn ansicht by studying them.H ard skills are contrasted with soft skills, which can be loosely defined as the personal attributes you need to succeed in the workplace.Instead of technical intelligence, soft skills concern social intelligence. Leadership, teamwork, and adaptability are examples of soft skills. For those who lack work experience, education, or training, having a rich set of soft skills can be your ticket to employment. So, if you are trying to find work but are worried about being unqualified, dont despair. Gaining employment is a matter of focusing on applying for roles that prioritize soft skills. Here are ten jobs you should consider1. Sales AssociateIf you have an outgoing, helpful personality, then youre probably a good fit for a sales associate role. Especially retail businesses are in constant need of people to assist their customers and sell their products. In general, these employers will overlook hard skills in favour of people with strong interpersonal skills who show enthusiasm and knowled ge of the company and its product.2. Construction/LabourerConstruction work is very diverse. Certain trades (plumber, electrician, etc.) will require you to hone your craft through certification programmes. But at many construction projects, there are general laborers who learn on-the-job. They get their start doing basic tasks and then working their way up to more responsibility.Soft skills that are demanded of these workers include reliability, a positive attitude and hard-working nature.3. Administrative AssistantAre you a highly organized person? Do you pride yourself on professionalism and attention to detail? Then working as an administrative assistant would be a great fit.Administrative assistants are the unsung heroes of offices everywhere. They are the ones who keep business running smoothly by scheduling meetings, maintaining filing systems, answering/redirecting phone calls, and much, much more. This is a great starting point for anyone looking to work in an office environ ment (case in point yours truly). But keep in mind that basic computer skills may be a requirement.4. Library TechnicianMany librarians get their start as library technicians. These are the people who ensure a positive experience for library visitors, and that means a pretty long list of responsibilities.Obviously a passion for books and promoting reading will help you get hired. But proven interpersonal and organizational skills are pivotal too. After all, youll be the one making sure the books end up on the right shelf.5. DriverOK, there is one hard skill that you must have to fill this role a drivers license, along with a clean driving record. The future may be filled with autonomous vehicles, but for the time being, drivers are in high-demand from a variety of businesses. Courier/postal services, food suppliers, and taxi services are just some examples of who you might work for as a driver.Being self-disciplined, patient and responsible are key to getting hired in these roles.6. Server/BartenderWorking as a server or bartender has helped millions of college students finance their studies (and social lives). Its one of the most common entry-level jobs among young people, and this has a lot to do with the accessibility of these roles.Getting a start as a server doesnt require years and years of education. Above all, restaurant and bar owners want friendly, reliable staff. Some experience handling transactions and epicurean knowledge helps but they arent essential starting out.One caveat to consider is that depending on where you are applying, servers may be required to obtain food safety certification before being hired. Though this is not a cumbersome process.7. Gardener/LandscaperCould there be a more perfect job for someone who loves the outdoors? And being a gardener or landscaper is even better if you already have a bit of a green thumb.Make no mistake, gardening and landscaping can be an art form, requiring a lot of intricate knowledge. But that knowle dge comes with time on the job.At an entry-level, landscaping companies want people with a willingness to get their hands dirty and do a bit of heavy lifting.8. Customer ServiceSatisfied customers are the lifeline of any business. So the people that interact with customers play a pivotal role in a companys success.Customer service representatives have the goal of building positive relationships with customers. Therefore, many of the skills employers are looking for are communication-related soft skills. These roles can involve interaction with people in-person (E.g. at a customer service desk) or over the phone (E.g. a company call center).9. Postal WorkerWorking behind a desk all day may not sound appealing to people who embrace an active lifestyle. So imagine being paid to roam the streets, listening to music, while delivering peoples mail. Our so-called paperless society hasnt taken hold just yet, so postal workers are still in demand. If you are healthy, punctual and have a strong attention to detail, youre probably the right fit for the job.Just remember youll need to brave the elements year-round.

Heres the exact number of cups of coffee you can drink per day

Heres the exact number of cups of coffee you can drink per dayHeres the exact number of cups of coffee you can drink per dayA cup ofcoffeemay be just what you need to get going in the morning.A second cup is to get out the door, and a third (OK, even a fourth) is likely if youre especially tired.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreBut if you frequently have half a dozen cups or more, you could be setting yourself up for some serious health complications, a new study inThe American Journal of Clinical NutritionTrusted Source reports.Australian researchers found that drinking six or more coffees a day increases a persons risk of heart disease by as much as 22 percent. In the United States, nearlyhalf of adultshave some fasson ofcardiovascular disease, and its responsible forone in every four Trusted Sourcedeaths annually.Americans are also drinking more coffee than ever, too.AReuters s urveyfound that 64 percent of Americans over age 18 drink at least one cup a day. Thats up a few percentage points from the year before, and the highest level in half a decade.Several previous studies have looked at the potential health benefits for the warm brew - andthere are many- but few have endeavored to discover at what point the risks of consuming the caffeinated drink begin to outweigh the rewards. So thats exactly what Dr. Ang Zhou and Professor Elina Hyppnen of the University of South Australia did.In the first study to test the upper limits of safe coffee consumption as related to cardiovascular health, the researchers examined how much coffee 347,077 people between the ages of 37 and 73 consumed. They then compared the coffee totals to cardiovascular disease risk. What they found suggests that the scales move toward risk when you reach the sixth cup of coffee and beyond. In order to maintain a healthy heart and a healthy blood pressure, people must limit their coffees to fewer than six cups a day - based on our data six welches the tipping point where caffeine started to negatively affect cardiovascular risk, Hyppnen said in astatement. What are the health benefits associated with coffee consumption?Beyond boosting energy, helping you focus, and even preventing yawns in the middle of a business meeting, research has found a myriad of instances when a coffee habit may have some protective health benefits.Coffee is thenumber one sourceof antioxidants in the human diet - yes, even over wine and tea,Vanessa M. Rissetto, MS, RD, CDN told Healthline.Aside from the caffeine giving you an early-morning energy buzz, those high levels of antioxidants can help protect your body from damage caused by free radicals, as well as fight off disease, she said. And the list of potential diseases and conditions that are less common in coffee drinkers is long.Caffeinated coffee is associated with lowering the risks for certain cancers and liver disease, saysKimbre Zahn , MD, Indiana University Health family medicine and sports medicine physician.Indeed,a 2011 studyTrusted Sourcefrom Harvard found that regular coffee consumption lowered a persons risk for developing prostate cancer.Daily consumption of three cups of coffee, whether caffeinated or decaffeinated, was associated with a17 percent trusted Sourcelower risk for all-cause mortality compared to no coffee intake, Dr. Zahn says.Caffeinated coffee also conveyed lower risks for cardiovascular disease and stroke with the highest benefits being seen in those consuming between three to five cups per day. What are the health risks associated with coffee consumption? But lest you start brewing a carafe every morning for these benefits alone, its important to understand that coffee is an outsized source of caffeine in the American diet, which can lead to several unintended problems.Coffee can cause insomnia, nervousness, restlessness, upset stomach, nausea, and vomiting, increased heart rate and breath ing rate, and other side effects, Rissetto says. Consuming large amounts of coffee might also cause headache, anxiety, agitation, ringing in the ears, and irregular heartbeat. And now, thanks to the study from Prof Hyppnen and Dr. Zhou, we know caffeine can cause high blood pressure, which is a precursor for cardiovascular disease. Its not the caffeine alone that can be harmful to a person either. Many coffee drinkers load their java up with cream, sugar, or sweeteners and flavoring ingredients that add calories and fat, which bring a host of their own potential health issues. The many add-ons that we put in our coffee can have serious negative impacts on our health, says Dr. Garth Graham, a former deputy assistant secretary at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and current president ofAetna Foundationand Vice President for Community Health Impact forCVS Health.Adding syrupy flavorings plus an additional packet of sugar or artificial sweeter, milk, or cream and then topp ing it all off with a dollop of whipped cream may be a nice treat once in a while, but those who do this regularly are putting themselves at increased risk related to excess calories, he said.Whats a cup of coffee?Instead of thinking about coffee in terms of cups - yes, one coffee cup is about 8 ounces - think about your consumption in terms oftotal caffeine. One cup typically equals about 70 to 140 milligrams of caffeine. If you pop down to your nearest caf and order a medium or large coffee, thats not always one cup (eight ounces) - thats likely two or even three, and depending on how strong the roast is, it may be even more.Although further studies are needed to identify the best amount, in general, consuming less than or equal to 400 milligrams of caffeine a day, or about four or five cups, is what wed recommend, Dr. Zahn says. You can also use onlinecaffeine calculatorsto account for any and all caffeine you consume.Remember, coffee isnt the only source of the stimulant. You ca n also find it in tea, soda, and sometimes foods. The bottom lineYou can still have your morning coffee - the potential benefits are still real - but if youve needed a reason to cut back, this new study finds it.Once you drink more than six cups in a day, youre increasing your risk for cardiovascular disease, which might erase any potential benefit from your first five cups.We cant definitively identify a causal link, and these outcomes may be more related to other lifestyle or behavioral choices by the consumer, Dr. Zahn says. Therefore, physicians arent recommending coffee for prevention of disease or other health reasons, but we know evidence does support the safety of consuming coffee in most cases. This article first appeared on Healthline. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityT he worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Marine Corps Designated Marksmen

seestreitmacht Corps Designated MarksmenMarine Corps Designated MarksmenBeing the designated marksman (DM) in your Marine unit is not a special MOS, but requires additional training at the three-week course- Designated Marksman Training. The weapon of choice has recently changed to the M27 automatic rifle from the M249 automatic rifle. A Designated Marksman must be able to engage multiple targets with accuracy, quickly, at distances far greater than any regular USMC rifleman is required.Typically, 550 meters and over 800 meters is the zone where designated marksmen are often tested. The Designated Marksman Course consists of twoweeks of training. One week of classes and one weekof live-fire training is the agenda that tests the Marines accuracy. There is a final Field Training Exercise (FTX) where the student Marines test to become the DM of the unit the Marine is attached. There is both the field training test as well as a classroom test about using the M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle. The focus is taking marksmanship to a new level as taught in boot camp as you will also learn how to use the weapon with the effects of how wind speed, temperature, and other environmental factors. Learning to call the wind, make range estimations, and understand how the temperature and barometric pressure affects shooting accuracy. Marksmen Today And Yesterday The Marksmanship Training Unit for Infantry Units aboard Marine Corps Air Ground Combat CenterTwentynine Palms, California, completed the firstDesignated MarksmanCourse for the M27 Infantry Assault Rifle in 2016, the first of its kind for West Coast Marine infantrymen. In the early days our countrys military, Marine sharpshooters were recruited to sit atop high masts on U.S. Naval vessels to shoot enemies during ship-to-ship battles with their muzzle-loaded muskets. This tradition of skilled marksmanship still lives today, through Marines around the globe as designated marksmen. Designated marksmen are also security forc es MOS as well as FAST Team members who sit in sandbag bunkers on the rooftop of U.S. Embassies around the world, guarding the lives of Marines, U.S. State Department workers, and others who live and work on the embassy grounds. FAST- Fleet Anti-terrorism Security Teams (FAST)- and Recapture Tactics Teams (RTT) are Marines who complete Security Forces training and are assigned a secondary Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) of 8152. They are also trained to become the designated marksman of that FAST Company as well. Snipers and Designated Marksmen There are many uses for the designated marksman throughout the Marine Corps. From Embassy Security Forces, FAST Companies, to Infantry Units, these designated marksmen are not classified snipers but have many of the same shooting skills of the sniper. The main difference in the DM and the sniper in the Marine Corps is snipers also use specialized rifles where the DM uses a standard M27 automatic rifle with basic optics. Also, the pur pose of a sniper is to find, stalk, and take out specific targets and relocate. The designated marksman is to support his unit and move with it or secure a facility like a security force on top of an American Embassy. Both are Marines good with a rifle, but snipers have many other skills that are necessary to operate independently of the main force. The designated marksmen look over the compound with a watchful eye, searching for anything out of the ordinary. With their binoculars, scope, and scouting scope attached to their rifle, the Marines also watch the streets surrounding the embassy for any possible terrorists who may threaten the lives of those inside the compound. The designated marksmen pair (shooter/spotter) provide overhead fire support with accuracy to the Marines on post at ground level. Only the best Marines in the unit are selected to attend the Designated Marksman Course, requiring a high fitness test score, outstanding rifle qualification, and exceed the standards set for the Marine Rifleman. While on post atop the embassy roof, the skilled riflemen constantly scan the area in and around the embassy compound. They are trained to spot any suspicious activity or persons and to call the Combat Operations Center to let them know of the situation. The Marines continue to watch the suspicious individual until they leave the area. If the person displays any hostile intent toward the embassy the designated marksmen take the proper necessary action, even if that means using their rifle. If the marksmen feel the activity is not important they will just make a mental note and continue to watch the area.
